The 2M competitions started in the beginning of the eighties. They were formed in SMSK (Zealand Model Soaring Club), as an alternative to F3B, so pilots with a lesser experience and money had possibilities to participate a competition on equal terms with other hobby pilots.
For the first 10 to 15 years it was very popular but then it faded a bit out. The cause might be, that it never became international, even though this was tried through some international postal competitions. For the time being it is gaining some of its lost popularity in the other Nordic countries resulting in a Nordic Championship.
The models used for competition is rather simple like the Gentle Lady or Spirit with or without modifications, but different self constructions have been seen with great success, see the 2M gallery.
The models are high started in the ordinary way with a pull at 6 kg. Then they shall fly 5 times respectively 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 and 7 minutes so precise as possible, and after each flight land on a 25 meter long strip with a margin of maximum 5 meter to each side, or there will be no points for the landing.
This is a round and a competition consist normally of 3 rounds. It is a very relaxed and social form of competition, where your competitor is your timekeeper, so in praxis two pilots can make a competition.
It is an ideal club competition, where you only need a high start, consisting of 30 meter rubber and 120 meter line, a 25 meter long rope, a stopwatch, a 5 meter tape measure, a form and a pencil. It can't be more easy.
2M models has often been criticized for there lesser performance than the somewhat bigger thermal models á la the English 100 inches. It is true, but the advantage of an easy and cheap model should make it a real hobby class, where you join it for the social togetherness for example in your own club.
And then a good 2M model isn't that bad after all, it thermals as well as all other soaring models but its penetration is somewhat poorer, but that can be a challenge too. My personal record with a 2M model is 2 hours and 18 minutes, so it is possible to get some nice flying.
At the next 2 pages you can see the officially 2M rules and a form, that can be used for competitions. If you want to print them, they are lying as a document ready to be folded at the middle, just click on:
